Barnstable Storm Shelter Opens; Pets Welcome

The Barnstable Intermediate School was opened as a shelter for those affected by a storm that knocked out power to more than 15,000 in town.

BARNSTABLE, MA — Barnstable officials on Saturday opened Barnstable Intermediary School for those affected by Friday's devastating nor'easter. The school is located at 895 Falmouth Road in Hyannis. Pets are welcome.

The storm knocked out power to half of Barnstable and about 15,000 were still without power as of Saturday morning.

Barnstable Intermediary School was one of three shelters opened on Cape Cod Saturday. The other shelters were at Falmouth High School and Cape Cod Regional Technical School in Harwich. The shelters are managed by the Barnstable County Regional Emergency Planning Committee.

At the height of the storm, more than 450,000 lost power across the state. Reports indicate outages will likely persist into late next week. The good news for line crews is the weather will be calm and seasonable all week, with brief periods of rain.

Friday's storm was blamed for at least one death after a tree fell on a man in Plympton.
