CAPE COD, MA — The same Vineyard Wind turbine that was damaged in 2024, spreading debris across the waters near Cape Cod and prompting outrage from officials and residents alike, was damaged again.
Reports confirmed Sunday that the same turbine was struck by lightning, further damaging the still broken turbine.
The Vineyard Gazette first reported the news, publishing a statement from company officials and the U.S. Coast Guard.

Early indications from the company are that the blade was struck by lightning, but further assessments are ongoing.
“This was contained to the damaged blade and based on current information there is no impact to the nacelle or turbine structure,” the company said. “Vineyard Wind deployed both aerial and maritime resources and based on current observations, there is no indication of debris from this event.”

The blade on this turbine broke off in July, littering the ocean around the turbine with debris and closing beaches across the Cape Cod and Islands.
They are now required to remove over 60 additional blades that were built in the same facility as the defective blade.
