Decades-Old Cape Cod Restaurant On Fire Sunday

An excavator peeled apart the building to help extinguish the blaze.

SANDWICH, MA — A Cape Cod seafood restaurant that has been in business for decades caught fire early Sunday, resulting in a blaze that took crews hours to extinguish.

Firefighters responded around 5:30 a.m. to Captain Scott’s restaurant on Tupper Road in Sandwich, where they arrived to find heavy smoke and fire in the back of the building, according to the Sandwich Fire Department, which noted flames were extending from the basement and the first floor was unsteady.

The natural gas regulator for the structure burned off, causing a leak, but the blaze was finally extinguished around 12:30 p.m., with the help of an excavator that peeled apart the building.
