Cape And Islands Law Enforcement Mourn Loss Of State Police Detective

Sgt. Gregory Furtado started his law enforcement career on Nantucket, and continued serving the Cape and Islands with the State Police.

CAPE COD, MA — The Cape and Islands law enforcement community has been mourning the sudden death of Massachusetts State Police detective Sgt. Gregory Furtado this week.

Furtado most recently served as Massachusetts State Police detective assigned to the Cape and Island's District Attorney's Office detective unit, but has long had connections to the area before his death at age 41.

Furtado graduated from the State Police Academy in 2006 and, before that graduation, worked as a police officer in Nantucket.

"We mourn his sudden loss and extend our deepest heartfelt condolences to the entire Furtado family as well as the Massachusetts State Police," the Nantucket Police Department said in a statement

Furtado also made his mark on departments on Cape Cod, with multiple departments making statements in the wake of his death.

"The Barnstable Police Department sends heartfelt condolences to the Massachusetts State Police and the family and friends of Sergeant Gregory Furtado after his sudden passing," officials with the Barnstable department said.

Officials in Falmouth noted that many officers had the chance to work with Furtado during his career.

"The Falmouth Police Department would like to offer our deepest condolences to the Massachusetts State Police due to the passing of active duty Sergeant Gregory R. Furtado," department officials said.

They continued:

"Many of us here at the Falmouth Police Department were fortunate to have worked aside Sergeant Furtado on numerous investigations. He will be greatly missed. We will be keeping our brothers and sisters at the Massachusetts State Police as well as Sergeant Furtado’s family and friends in our thoughts and prayers. Sergeant Gregory R. Furtado, may you rest in eternal peace."

Services

The State Police Association of Massachusetts have announced dates for services of Sgt. Gregory Furtado, who died suddenly over the weekend. He was 41.

Services are scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday in Plymouth. A wake is scheduled for Wednesday at Cartmell-Davis Funeral Home, 373 Court St, at 1:45 p.m. A funeral mass will take place Thursday at Saint Peter’s Church, 86 Court St., at 9 a.m.
