BARNSTABLE, MA — As the murder trial for the man accused of killing Yarmouth Police Sgt. Sean Gannon in 2018 continues, testimony was received Wednesday from the forensic scientist assigned to testing the crime scene.

The forensic scientist testified that she found bloodstains on a pile of money at the scene of the murder, as well as gunshot residue on the hands of Thomas Latanowich, according to WHDH.

Latanowich, 32, of Somerville, was charged with first-degree murder, mistreating a police dog, and seven other charges in connection to the shooting and death of Gannon on April 12, 2018.

Police said Latanowich shot Gannon while he and six other officers were serving a warrant for a possible probation violation at a Marstons Mills home.

Gannon and his Police K-9 Nero were searching the attic when Latanowich opened fire, according to Cape & Islands District Attorney Michael O'Keefe.

A standoff followed and Latanowich surrendered after about two hours, O'Keefe said. Authorities said Latanowich also shot Nero in the face and neck, though the dog survived.

Prosecutors say Latanowich was hiding in the attic and that officers warned him that they were coming in, making multiple announcements.

Latanowich who has a lengthy criminal record is also facing other charges, including assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, firearm possession without a license, and mistreating/interfering with a police dog.

Latanowich has pleaded not guilty and has been held without bail since.
