Police Search For Driver Who Abandoned Car On A Harwich Beach

After crashing into beach restrooms and eventually landing in a dune, police say a driver was picked up by another car - fleeing the scene.

HARWICH, MA — Harwich police are searching for a driver who they say took off after crashing into beach dunes and a bathroom.

Police received a call from a resident near Red River Beach around 9:45 p.m., informing police that they heard a loud crash when a car had driven into the dunes near their house.

Once officers got to the scene, they saw the car had crashed into the building that houses the bathrooms for the beach.

Police say the force of the crash destroyed the small wooden shed attached to the bathrooms, cracking the concrete structure that holds them.

The driver then drove the car back down the beach, crashing into the dunes, landing in mud and water, police said.

"Miraculously the driver managed to escape and was picked up by unknown other vehicle and driven from the scene," Harwich police posted on Facebook. "This person did a tremendous amount of damage to property but did manage to upload a sample of his work to Snapchat."

The car was able to be removed with the help of a local towing company.

Police are investigating the crash and say they "hope to have the responsible person charged in the very near future."
