Hyannis Catholic Football Team Suspended After Using Racial Slurs
Students from St. John Paul II School in Hyannis reportedly used racial slurs against Cathedral High School in a game over the weekend.
HYANNIS, MA — All football activities have been suspended at a Catholic school in Hyannis after the team reportedly used racist language towards opposing team members during a game over the weekend.
School officials launched an investigation after reports that students from St. John Paul II School were using racial slurs during the game against Cathedral High School in Boston.
A statement from the Diocese of Fall River called the allegations "deeply troubling," and wanted the students to "realize the gravity of the use of such language," on and off the field.

During Saturday's 1 p.m. game at a field in Sandwich, the president of Cathedral High School Dan Carmody said his team was "the subject of racist language while playing a game they worked so hard to enjoy."
"These allegations are deeply troubling to the entire John Paull II school community and do not reflect the school's values and culture," a statement from St. John Paul II School read. "Racism is a moral evil that has no place in our society. St. John Paul II School is committed to working diligently to ensure that this truth is upheld at all times."

Carmody also released a statement saying, "Our Cathedral family is one of unity, acceptance, loyalty, and respect. We will continue to work together with the Saint John Paul II leadership team and trust there will be accountability and an opportunity for restoration and growth. We are proud of our coaching staff and our players for handling the situation with class and dignity."
St. John Paul II School and Fall River Diocesan officials said "appropriate steps, including any disciplinary actions, will be taken based upon the findings” of their investigation.
It is unclear how long the team will be suspended at this time.
