BARNSTABLE, MA — A Cape Cod man was drunk when he crashed at a park in Hyannis then sped off during Friday's nor'easter, police said. Bhaumik Patel, 27, of Yarmouth, was charged with driving under the influence of liquor (second offense), driving negligently and leaving the scene of a crash. Police said a key piece of evidence was the busted license plate of his BMW recovered at the crash scene.
Police said Patel was driving a BMW sport utility vehicle in Hyannis Friday night when he crashed into a guardrail at Independence Park then sped off. An officer in Yarmouth caught up with Patel and pulled him over on Summer Street at about 8:30 p.m.
"The driver stated he had hit a nearby tree but police were unable to find a tree in the area with damage," Yarmouth police said in a statement. "Patrol Officer Jason Batchelder determined the driver had been drinking."
