MASSACHUSETTS — It isn't so much a question of what there is to do in the Boston area and beyond, but rather, what should locals do?

Welcome to Patch's latest weekly roundup of highlight-worthy events across the city and surrounding areas. We've compiled them into one, easy-to-follow list, for your weekend planning.

August marks what many are celebrating as the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, and Saturday in Boston provides an opportunity to do just that.

At two different events — GLD FSTVL and the JPEG Mafia and Danny Brown show — the diverse array of what hip-hop is and has developed into is on display.

With JPEG Mafia and Danny Brown highlighting their latest album, hip-hop stretched to the limits of experimentation and, at points, noise music, are joined by agile rhyme schemes and hilarious punchlines.

Nearby at City Hall Plaza, GLD FSTVL is headlined by Atlanta's EarthGang and New York City's politically-minded Dead Prez. Though the two duos span different genres and regions, they aren't all that far apart in messaging and technical prowess.

Dead Prez is one of the more influential groups when it comes to political messaging in hip-hop, and most fans will know their song of the same name. EarthGang is more subtle in their approach; less grab you by your lapel and more talk you through it, but listen deeply and the messaging isn't too different.

But those are just two examples of a weekend full of events and concerts from Boston to Cape Cod and beyond.
