YARMOUTH, MA — A man with a "long criminal history" who is known to law enforcement was arrested after a standoff with SWAT on Wednesday, Yarmouth police said.

Officers responded to a disturbance on Lakefield Road around 2:30 p.m. and learned that Michael Giampapa hard barricaded himself in his home and was possibly armed with a gun, police said.

The Cape Cod Regional SWAT Team responded to the scene, and several attempts were made through a crisis negotiator for Giampapa to exit the home, police said. Giampapa repeatedly stepped out of the home, yelling and confronting officers, and refusing to comply with their orders, police said.

Giampapa fled to his car and attempted to back out of his driveway, crashing into an armored vehicle that was blocking the exit, police said. He then accelerated forward and drove into the side of the house, where SWAT pinned his car, police said.

Giampapa, armed with a knife, stepped out of the car and refused to respond to officers' demands, police said. He was shot with non-lethal rounds and retreated back into the home. SWAT then pushed open the front door with the armored vehicle, forcing Giampapa out the back, where he was taken into custody, police said.

Police said a loaded Smith & Wesson .380-caliber gun was found during a search of the home. The gun was reported stolen in Barnstable in 2016.

Giampapa was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon – vehicle, possession of a firearm without an FID card, possession of a firearm with three prior violent/drug convictions, improper storage of a firearm, possession of ammunition without an FID card, receiving stolen property (firearm) and disorderly conduct.

"Giampapa is well known to law enforcement and has a long criminal history, including a conviction in 2013 for a double shooting in Yarmouth, as well as numerous other assault and battery and weapon-related Charges," Yarmouth police said in a statement.

Giampapa was out on pre-trial release on assault and battery charges stemming from a 2019 case in Yarmouth.
