From local fields to national fame, these stars got their start in Barnstable.

Sports run deep in Barnstable, and Barnstable High School has long been at the heart of it. It’s no surprise some standout talent once wore the Red Hawks uniform. Today we're celebrating five unforgettable athletes from Barnstable High School who made a name for themselves well beyond the hometown field.
1. Max Willman – NHL Ice Hockey Forward (New Jersey Devils)
Willman played varsity ice hockey at Barnstable High, serving as team captain during the 2012-13 season and contributing to three consecutive Old Colony League championships. He went on to play professionally after college, playing with the Philadelphia Flyers and, most recently, the New Jersey Devils. (Source: NHL)
2. Mike Dwyer – NFL Defensive Tackle (Dallas Cowboys)
A Barnstable High graduate, Dwyer went on to earn All-Yankee Conference honors at the University of Massachusetts. He later went on to play professionally, signing as a free agent with multiple teams over his tenure and playing a season with the Dallas Cowboys. (Source: Pro Football Reference)

3. Joe Sherman – MLB Pitcher (Philadelphia Athletics)
A graduate of Barnstable High School, Sherman enjoyed a brief MLB career with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1915. (Source: MLB)
4. Dan Simonds – Baseball Coach & Former MLB Player (Baltimore Orioles)
Simonds graduated from Barnstable High, played catcher at Davidson College and was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 7th round in 1987. He later transitioned into coaching, with a notable stint at Miami University prior to becoming the Director of Baseball at IMG Academy. (Source: IMG Academy)

5. Laura Cogswell – Ice Hockey Defense
A 2022 Barnstable High graduate, Cogswell was a varsity defenseman and captain on the girls’ ice hockey team, earning Cape and Islands League All-Star honors before continuing at Miami University, Ohio. (Source: NCSA Sports)
