5 Things: The 'Pops' at the High School, Playtime and Softball

Events happening in Belmont on Friday, May 10.

1. Belmont High School's "Pops" Weekend begins tonight at 7 p.m. in the lunchroom of Belmont High School with a Pops-style concert. Sit down at tables, have some snacks and drinks and listen to some great music. 

2. The senior book discussion group will meet at 11 a.m. at the Beech Street Center (the Belmont senior center) to discuss a wonderful book on facing choices with courage and love: "The Hiding Place" by Corrie ten Boom, who helped hide the Frank family in Amsterdam during the German occupation of the Netherlands. 

3. Playtime is a drop-in, informal playgroup for toddlers and preschoolers, where both children and adults can meet new friends. Call the Belmont Public Library's Children's Room at 617-993-2880 with any questions.

4. Belmont High School Softball will be in action today as the Marauders host the Winchester High School Sachems at the softball field. The action begins at 3:45 p.m. 

5. On this day in 1869, the Transcontinental Railroad, linking the eastern and western United States, is completed at Promontory Summit, Utah with the golden spike. At the time, it was the equivilant of sending a man to the moon which occurred a century later.
