5 Things: Cooking with Chocolate for Teens

Events occurring in Belmont on April 17.

1. Garbage drill: The calendar might say it's Wednesday but in the world of trash collection, today is "Tuesday" thanks to Paul Revere and Patriots' Day. So don't be hauling out the garbage a day early so it stills on the curb an extra day allowing all sort of wildlife to make a meal of your refuge.

2. Send those teens already bored during April recess over to the Belmont Public Library to have some fun with chocolate. Chef Brian Sway will demonstrate creative ways to get more chocolate in their lives that go beyond just opening a bag of Hershey's minis and digging in. From 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Assembly Room of the Belmont Public Library.

3. The people behind the Belmont Farmers Market – less than two months away from reopening for the season – the Belmont Food Collaborative will be meeting tonight in the Flett Room of the Belmont Public Library from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

4. Come visit the new art exhibit at the Beech Street Center of oil paintings by Jeannette Martin. Martin paints landscapes, still lifes and portraits in oil and watercolor. She was recently commissioned to paint the portraits of the children of Chief Justice Roberts’ children. Her realist perspective evolved from years of exploration of various techniques of expression until she arrived at the one most suited to her artistic purpose. Martin's works are on sale. The exhibit runs through April 26.

5. On this day in 1397, Geoffrey Chaucer tells the Canterbury Tales for the first time at the court of Richard II. Chaucer scholars have also identified this date in 1387 as the start of the book's pilgrimage to Canterbury.
