5. On this day 100 years ago, in 1913, Igor Stravinsky's ballet score, The Rite of Spring, receives its premiere performance in Paris, provoking a so called "riot." Much that has been said of this event was exaggerated by the young and just known Stravinsky's management later: yes, a "riot" did occurr but not so much for the score itself; there was much more radical experimentation going on at the time. In reality, it was the avant-garde choreography by the great dancer Vaslav Nijinsky, with stage designs and costumes by Nicholas Roerich, combined with music not usually heard at the ballet, that caused the audience - filled with older men coming to see the dancer - that led to cat calls and the such.
