Editor at the The New Yorker for decades, "[h]is comments, pieces and poems ... helped to set the tone of sophisticated wit, irreverence and necessary candor almost since the magazine's beginnings in the 1920's," said White's obituary in the New York Times. He was also a major children's author having penned ''Stuart Little,'' ''Charlotte's Web'' and ''The Trumpet of the Swan.''
And writers continue to follow his advice on English usage in ''The Elements of Style" which he revised and expanded on William Strunk Jr.'s textbook.
