Belmont Baseball's Shea Shuts Out Beverly; Home Playoff Game Monday

Marauders' upset Beverly, 2-0, in Friday's heat. Host Wayland for a home playoff game.

Belmont's Branden Shea was as hot as the 94 degree heat he pitched in.

The junior pitcher hurled a shut out against 15-win Beverly High School while two runs in the top of the fifth allowed the 11-9 Marauders to upset the sixth seed Panthers, 2-0, in Friday's oppressive heat, May 31, at Beverly in the first round of the MIAA's Division 2 North Sectional Baseball Tournament.

Belmont's next game will be the quarterfinals on Monday, May 3 at 4 p.m. at home at Brendon Grant Field against the 14th-seed Wayland High School Warriors, 7-12, which upset Belmont's Middlesex League-rival Burlington High School, 5-4, in eight innings on Friday.

Shea threw a masterpiece against Beverly, throwing a perfect game aginst the potent Panthers for four complete innings until a walk off base-on-balls in the bottom of the fifth. He had a no-hitter until the sixth inning.

Belmont scored their brace in the top of the fifth. The first came from a walk, a double off the right fielder's mitt and a squeeze play while a Brian Coutts RBI single brought in the second.
