Belmont Girls' Lacrosse Take Double Dip to Lexington, Winchester

Home losses pushes record below .500.

A pair of losses at Harris Field has Belmont High School's Girls' Lacrosse team battling to stay above the .500 level that would secure the team a return to the playoffs for the third year running.

Against a defensive-strong Lexington High School led by goalie Sara Lehman on Friday, May 3, Belmont's sophomore standout goaltender Linda Herlihy kept the team in the second half with numerous solo saves.

Trailing 7-5 early in the second, the Marauder's leading scorer, senior Katie Leinbach (who finished the game with four goals) took over by not just winning consecutive face-offs but scoring goals while holding possession.

But after saving two shots – both hitting the post – a goal by Fiona Fitzgerald with 11:40 remaining in the game led to Minutemen scoring twice more to come away with the win, 10-7.

On Monday, May 6, Belmont hosted 14th-ranked Winchester. The quick Sachems sprinted off to a 8-1 lead midway through the first half but four straight goals (two from Julia Russo and one from both Sophia Eisenbach-Smith and Lizzie Frick while Leinbach picked up three assists) for the remainder of the first half and in the first minute of the second period saw the Marauders' knocked down the deficit to 8-5.

But a quick goal by senior Abby Wheeler followed by one of seven goals by Megan Hennessey started an onslaught from Winchester as they went on a 9-1 run before Belmont scored three goals in the final minutes to hit double digits for goals, losing 19-10. Smith and Frick finished with four and three goals each.
