BELMONT, MA — Belmont police reported a rise in home break-ins recently and are urging residents to take simple precautions and avoid being a target. The majority of break-ins are happening in the late afternoon or early evening, police said. In the last few incidents, police said the suspect got in through a back door and targeted expensive jewelry, electronics and cash. Most of the break-ins happened near Winn Brook Elementary School. Extra police patrols have been out in the area and detectives are investigating the specific break-ins.Police suggest keeping valuables in a safe deposit box rather than a dresser or drawer.Police offered these tips on what to look for: 1. Someone parking in front of your house and then walking down the street or around the corner. 2. A stranger walking around your or your neighbor's house or in &amp; through their backyard.
