Belmont Week in Review: School Committee Member Selected, New Distillery Opens

Events happening in Belmont over the past week.

Lesley University administrator and educator Lisa Fiore was named to fill the vacant Belmont School Committee seat by a joint group comprised of the committee and Board of Selectmen. The vote was noted for questions two committee members had concerning suggested negative comments concerning the other finalist, one-time committee member Elizabeth Gibson.

The partial shutdown of the federal government has no impact, yet, on the running of Belmont services and schools.

Belmont's first distillery, Damnation Alley, opened for business in the former Zeff Photo Supply building on Brighton Avenue. 

Belmont has joined a number of suburban communities in eastern Massachusetts seeking to reduce the noise being generated by the increased number of commercial flights flying over the cities and towns from Logan Airport.

The Belmont Fire Department is currently running its first advance life support service rather then contracting out the operation.

What a week on Concord Avenue: first road work on the street through Belmont Center caused a great deal of traffic congestion on Monday, and then midweek, the street was reduced to a single lane in each direction due to a scheduled repair that took much longer then expected.

A big victory for Girls' Swimming as Belmont easily swept past decade-long champions Reading High for its second consecutive in the past year.
