Belmont Week in Review: Next Superintendent Named, No High School Renovation This Year

What happened in the past week in Belmont.

John Phelan, the assistant school superintendent for Milton, was named to be the next Belmont School Superintendent by the Belmont School Committee. Phelan said in an interview that he will be meeting with staff and the community as he prepares to take over the control of the district.

The Community Preservation Committee is submitting seven proposals totaling $2.7 million for Town Meeting approval in May, which includes $2 million for a new Underwood Pool.

The state's school building authority rejected an application from the School Committee for the renovation of Belmont High School for the tenth time in as many years. Yet officials say that it is only a matter of time before project, costing upwards of $90 million, will be approved. 

A growing number of break-ins has Belmont Police issuing advice to residents how not to be a victim of this crime. The BPD issued another warning that warming your car unattended on cold mornings could prove too tempting for thieves who stole two vehicles from driveways in the past week.

Belmont's trash collection and disposal contracts have been set for the next several years.

Belmont took it on the chin as a snow storm hit on Tuesday during rush hour making driving near impossible on hilly sections of town.
