Football: Backus Prepares For The End Game

At 6'5", 225 pounds, try not focusing on senior co-captain Christian Backus.

When Belmont High School's football Marauders take the field for their first game Saturday, Sept. 11, at 6 p.m. at Harris Field against Cardinal Spellman, it will be difficult not to focus on Belmont's Christian Backus.

Senior co-captain Backus, who stands in at six foot, five inches and 225 pounds, will be playing on the end of the offensive and defensive lines as a defensive end and, where he can be a difference maker, as a tight end clearing the way for the running backs and being a head (and more) taller and fifty pounds (or more) heavier than most of the defensive backs attempting to cover and block him.

Backus's expected prowess on the playing field has him named one of the Boston Herald's  "Players to Watch" for the coming year in the Middlesex League.

An excellent student, Backus has received some initial  letters of interest from colleges. But in the future, football may have to compete with his true sporting love: rugby.
