Ice Alert As Freezing Rain Could Make Driving Treacherous: See Latest Forecast

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Weather Advisory for most of Massachusetts starting Tuesday night.

MASSACHUSETTS — A prolonged period of freezing rain could make driving treacherous in parts of Massachusetts on Tuesday night with the National Weather Service issuing a Winter Weather Advisory for most of the state.

The NWS was calling for rain to begin at about 7 p.m. with temperatures hovering near freezing in most areas.

"Icing expected," the NWS said. "Highest chances for greater than a glaze for the higher terrain.
May result in slick roads, especially if untreated. Use caution if traveling."

The NWS said a light glaze is expected within the I-95 corridor with ice accumulation between one-tenth and two-tenths of an inch in interior southern New England.

There may be sporadic power outages in areas where ice accumulation approaches a quarter-inch of ice on trees and power lines.

The Winter Weather Advisory was in effect for all of the Bay State, except southeastern Massachusetts, Cape Cod and the Islands.

Freezing rain will change to plain rain in most areas overnight, but icy conditions may persist into the morning commute in the higher terrain of Worcester County and northern Middlesex County.

Skies will clear throughout the day on Wednesday as part of a warming trend with highs near 40 degrees.

Thursday is shaping up as the nicest day of the week with sunny skies, light winds, and highs well into the 40s.

Highs could reach the 50s on Friday and Saturday. But that will come with bouts of rain both Friday and then again on Saturday. Rain on Saturday could be heavy at times.

Sunday will feature clearing, slightly cooler temperatures in the 40s, and a brisk west wind.

For the New England Patriots playoff game on Sunday night, those attending can expect a clear, cold and windy night with temperatures dropping from the 30s at kickoff into the high 20s by the fourth quarter.
