No Bread, Bananas: What's Open Friday
Shaws, CVS, Starbucks and most convenience stores will be open Friday; when they are closing is another matter.
The long lines of shoppers waiting to pay for groceries at Shaw's Supermarket at 6:15 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, rivaled the pre-Thanksgiving Day rush.
"This is nor'easter shopping," said one Belmont resident as he picked up another box of cereal to go along with two jugs of milk, referring to the much anticipated blizzard barreling down on New England with an anticipated arrival time of Friday afternoon.
The parking lot was filled and a steady stream of customers at the Trapelo Road location appeared to have have a craving for shovels, water, bread and bananas. Displays of those staples flew out the store as customers made the last minute dash for provisions before what one customer said could be "days indoors."

But for one of the Shaw's managers, "We'll be open (Friday) just like any other day."
"I'll be here," he said confidently.

It's when they are closing Friday and reopening Saturday that is trickier to predict, according to employees and management.
Shaw's Supermarket will open Friday under normal hours "and we'll see what happens," said store management Thursday.
CVS Pharmacy on Trapelo Road and in Belmont Center will also open on time but employees said that customers should call regarding hours Friday "as we anticipate most stores will be closing in the afternoon when (Gov. Deval Patrick) announces a state of emergency and the (MBTA) shuts down."
Starbucks will open at 5 a.m. at both locations in Belmont (in Cushing Square and Belmont Center) but both will be closing around 4 p.m., if not earlier. The managers will attempt to reopen Saturday at 8 a.m. "if that is possible," said one employee.
