Smile: Be Part of Town-Wide Photo At Joey's Park Today

Be there at 10:30 a.m. at the Winn Brook Elementary.

Smile and be part of local history. Today, Saturday, April 27, the public is invited to take part in a community-wide photo at Joey’s Park playground.

“If you have brought your kids to this park, if you helped build this park, if you have loved this park,” says Ellen Schreiber co-chair of the Friends of Joey’s Park, “then come out and be part of this historic photo.”

Residents who would like to be part of the photo should come to Joey’s Park, located behind the Winn Brook Elementary School on Cross Street, at 10:30 am.

“The photo shoot coincides with the opening day of Second Soccer,” explains Diane Miller, co-chair of the Friends of Joey’s Park.

“Joey’s Park is a town treasure that has been enjoyed by families throughout Belmont, including generations of families who have participated in Second Soccer.”

Volunteers built the playground in 1989 and then gave it to the town as a gift.  Now a new group of volunteers called the Friends of Joey’s Park is making plans to build a new playground next October.

“As we look to the future and a new playground, we also want to honor the past,” says Schreiber.

“The community photo at Joey’s Park is a way to preserve nearly a quarter century of wonderful memories.”

The photo will be posted on the web at www.joeyspark.org and will also be available for download.   Residents are also invited to share memories about the park by sending an email to friends@joeyspark.org or posting on the Friends of Joey’s Park facebook page.

So how many people will fit in the park for that photo?

“I don’t know,” says Miller. “We look forward to finding out Saturday morning.”

The Friends of Joey’s Park is a volunteer group of more than 80 Belmont families working to build a new park that maintains the magic and honors the history of the original playground built in 1989 in memory of Joey O’Donnell.   The new park will be built in October of 2013 in much the same spirit at the original one with design input from children and a massive “community-build” barn raising.   Learn more at www.joeyspark.org.
