The Week in Review in Belmont: Joey's Park Schedule, Honoring Paula and Dan

What happened in Belmont in the past week.

The Friends of Joey's Park released the building schedule for the new playground to be constructed adjacent to the Winn Brook School; it begins Aug. 5 with the destruction of the existing wooden structure and is completed with a "community barn raising" on Columbus Day weekend. 

His running friends and the Foundation of Belmont Education are planning a 5K race on Oct. 6 through Belmont streets to honor Dan Scharfman with the money raised to support the Foundation's initiative to bring iPads to all students at the High School in the next four years as well as train teachers to use the tablets to enhance instruction at the school.  

Due to customer demands, a effort to increase its cliental and due to expected future business with the approval of Cushing Village, Savinos Grill on Common Street in Cushing Square will introduce a lunch menu in mid-September.

A month before her death from breast cancer, photojournalist and photographer Paula Lerner gave her camera equipment and dark room supplies to Belmont High School so it could be used by its students. The students in the honors photography class honored Lerner's bequest with an exhibit at the Belmont Media Center that was inspired by her work.

Willa Rockett is truly Belmont's drama queen having been a keystone of the Belmont Dramatic Club since 1940. The town came out on Monday to celebrate her 100th birthday
