The Week of Review in Belmont: Light Department and NSTAR Now Partners, Rugby State Champs
News and events over the past week in Belmont.
In an agreement signed this week, the Belmont Municipal Light Department is partnering with utility giant NSTAR to build the town's new electric system which will reduce the total debt of the project – that includes constructing a new substation and laying 115kW cables – from $53 million to $23 million, cutting in half the anticipated jump in average bills to pay for the project from 14 percent to 7 percent.
Due to increases in MWRA fees, Belmont's combined water and sewer rates will increase by 4.6 percent in the coming fiscal year. Expect even higher increases in future years as the MWRA anticipates higher contributions from their partner municipalities.
Belmont's fiscal $91.7 million budget came out this week but it is subject to change in anticipation of the final state budget which will impact education and general state aid.
