Beverly Public Library To Host Talk On Animation

A professor of film and animation history at Montserrat will give a talk called "Animation and the American Imagination."

BEVERLY, MA – "Animation and the American Imagination" is the topic of discussion on Monday, March 27, at 9:30 a.m. at the Beverly Public Library. The guest speaker will be Gordon Arnold, a professor of film and animation history at Montserrat College of Art and the author of a recent book on the subject.

Arnold's talk will focus on the early years of animation's "Golden Age," an era that began in the Roaring Twenties and lasted until the end of World War II. This was the time in which Felix the Cat, Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Bugs Bunny, Betty Boop, Popeye, and other cartoon stars became household names.

Animated cartoons of the period entertained adults, as well as children. But they did more than entertain. Working on many levels, these cartoons reflected a changing society through critical years of American history. In that light, the lecture takes a new look at familiar creations as it relates animation's biggest stars of the time to the real world of the period.
