Beverly Scientist Talks Winter Waterfowl on Wednesday Night

Five things to know - a great way to start the day with a quick look at the events and happenings in the city.

Welcome to “5 Things,” your daily source for community events, happenings in the city and other little tidbits of information. Here are five things you need to know on Wednesday, Jan. 29.

1. Snow: There is a chance of light snow first thing on Wednesday, then the day will have cloudy skies to start and clearing later on with a high temperature in the mid-20s. The wind will blow from the west at 5-10 miles per hour.

2. History: The "voluminous, heartfelt journals of a diarist with deep Beverly connections" - Francis Ellingwood Abbot - will be the focus of a talk on Wednesday night by Brian A. Sullivan at the Beverly Historical Society. Sullivan, a former senior reference archivist at the Harvard University Archives and archivist of Mount Auburn Cemetery, has written a book about Abbot, who took his life in Beverly's Central Cemetery at the grave of his wife, Katie Loring Abbot, 10 years to the day after her death in October 1903. The program starts at 7 p.m. and is $ per person or free for historical society members.
