Beverly Woman Dies After Being Strangled by Her Husband: DA Says

Edith Black-Scherer died Saturday from injuries suffered at the hands of her husband, according to the DA's office.

A Beverly woman is dead and her estranged husband will soon be facing first-degree murder charges.

The Essex County District Attorney’s Office said Saturday night that 45-year-old Edith Black-Scherer had died following a Nov. 16 domestic assault incident involving her estranged husband.

Axel Scherer, 45, was already being held without bail on charges of assault with intent to murder, strangulation and assault and battery on a family or household member, according to Salem News.

The DA’s said Saturday that it will upgrade the charges to first-degree murder on Monday.

WCVB reported that Scherer walked into the Beverly police station on Nov. 16 and told police he had just killed his wife.

According to Salem News, Black-Scherer was rushed to Beverly Hospital on Nov. 16 after police found her unconscious, without a pulse and with “the strings of her sweatshirt wrapped tightly around her neck,” a police report read.
