Cabot Street 'Surprises' Will Cost Beverly $1.4 Million More
A $2.3 million project to replace 100-year-old water pipes will jump in cost after workers found problems "far greater than expected."

BEVERLY, MA —Beverly City Council approved an additional $1.4 million to replace and repair century-old water pipes under Cabot Street.
The project was originally slated to cost $2.4 million but workers found "quite a few surprises" when they started the work, Public Works Commissioner Mike Collins told city council during a remote meeting Monday. The $1.4 million approved by council is a loan which will be repaid through the city's water enterprise fund.
The work is being done at the same time Cabot Street is undergoing reconstruction. City business owners have applauded the fortunate timing of the work, coming during the shutdown of most businesses by the coronavirus pandemic.
