City Gets Grant to Reconstruct Broadway

Broadway will look a lot different this time next year: But don't worry, construction doesn't start until spring 2017.

BEVERLY, MA –The city got a $400,000 Complete Streets Grant to reconstruct Broadway from Cabot Street to Rantoul Street, but fear not: The project isn't set to begin until spring 2017.

The grant, through the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, will allow the city to reconstruct Broadway. The project will include reconstruction and widening of sidewalks, new trees to line the street, pedestrian-scale street lights, and markings to indicate a shared bike lane.

Beverly is one of the first recipients of the new grant program, and is one of 11 cities and towns. The programs is meant to incentivize cities to make roads safe and accessible for all modes of transportation, across ages and abilities.

"The project will greatly improve pedestrian and bicycle connectivity to the Beverly Depot commuter station, linking the station with two downtown commercial districts and the recently designated Beverly Arts District," said a news release from Mayor Michael Cahill's office.

The statement said construction is expected to begin spring 2017.

"This is another example of investment that will help revitalize Beverly's downtown," said Cahill in the news release. "Broadway is a crucial link between the Depot and the rest of our beautiful and vibrant downtown." Cahill also congratulated Grant Director Priscilla Walsh, Planning Director Aaron Clausen, City Engineer Greg St. Louis, and their teams.
