Thousands Without Power in Beverly As Wind Storm Blows Through

A fall Nor'easter with wind gusts close to 50 miles per hour downed trees and wires, cutting power to thousands in Beverly on Wednesday.

Thousands of electric customers in Beverly were without power on Wednesday night as a storm with wind gusts near 50 miles per hour battered the city.

The bulk of the outages were in the Raymond Farms and Shingleville neighborhoods, north of Elliott Street and west of McKay Street, where National Grid said 1,372 homes and businesses lost power at about 7:30 p.m. Power there was expected back by 9:30 p.m., according to National Grid.

Other outages were reported in the Montserrat neighborhood near the train station and on Beaver Pond Road.

In all, about 15 percent of the electric customers were without power in Beverly, totalling 2,888. Everyone was expected to have their power back by 10:15 p.m., according to National Grid.

The wind was blowing at 20-30 miles per hour all afternoon with a peak gust of 47 miles per hour recorded at the Beverly Municipal Airport weather station.

Trees and wires were also down on Hale Street near Endicott College, where the road was blocked. Endicott College security said on its Facebook page that power was out at the college’s campus. Cabot Street was also blocked near Chestnut Street because a tree came down. Corning Street had been blocked by a downed tree for a while but it was cleared.

A sign also blew down at the former Sports Page Pub on Rantoul Street.
