12-Year Prison Term For Death of Teen Cyclist

Fritz Philogene, 18, was struck and killed while apparently waiting to cross the street on his bicycle.

Boston, MA - A drunk driver faces up to 12 years in state prison, after admittedly causing a 2015 accident that killed a cyclist waiting to cross the street.

Fritz Philogene, of Dorchester, was 18.

Gregory McCoy, 28, pleaded guilty to manslaughter while operating under the influence, leaving the scene of a collision causing death, and leaving the scene of a collision causing injury, and received a sentence of 8 to 12 years in prison Tuesday.

McCoy was allegedly speeding in a friend's Cadillac when he crashed into the back of a BMW stopped at a red light on the corner of Norwell and Talbot in Dorchester. It was around 10:10 p.m. on May 19, 2015. As both cars spun into the intersection, the BMW struck Philogene, who was at the corner with his bicycle and apparently waiting to cross the street, according to the District Attorney's office.

The crash also injured the 33-year-old driver of the BMW and McCoy’s passenger, a 26-year-old Quincy man who owned the Cadillac.

McCoy allegedly pulled himself from the damaged Cadillac and ran, trailing blood behind him.

With the help of witnesses, Boston Police identified McCoy as the car's driver at the time of the crash. Once found by police, McCoy was transported to Carney Hospital, where a blood sample was taken. Later analysis of that sample suggested his blood-alcohol content at the time of the collision was above .08, the DA's office said.
