$16.9 Million Approved for New Commuter Rail Station for Fairmount Line

The new Blue Hill Avenue station will be open to passengers by 2019.

BOSTON, MA — The MBTA’s Fiscal and Management Control Board this week approved the construction of a brand new Blue Hill Avenue Commuter Rail Station between Route 28 and Cummins Highway on the Fairmount Line.

The contract is for $16.97 million, according to the Mass. Department of Transportation.

The Blue Hill Avenue Station will mark the ninth station on the Fairmount Commuter Rail Line, roughly 20 minutes outside downtown Boston. It will be about six-and-a-half miles from South Station and a quarter mile from Mattapan Square, connecting the community to other neighborhoods along the corridor, according to MassDOT.

The transportation department describes the plans as follows:

The station design includes one center-island platform between Blue Hill Avenue and Cummins Highway located below the street level measuring approximately 768 feet as well as two covered, fully accessible pedestrian ramps from both Cummins Highway and Blue Hill Avenue. The station will also include canopies, warning strips, benches/windscreens, closed circuit television (CCTV) security cameras, new lighting, new messaging signs, train approach warning systems, and historical graphic panels.

The project was advertised at $26.55 million in September of 2015. The board accepted the lowest bid, and will contract with McCourt Construction Company, MassDOT said.

Blue Hill Avenue Station is expected to be open along the Fairmount Line for boarding and disembarking ijn 2019 after a two-year construction period. It will be the second new station to open, after the Boston Landing Station on the Framingham/Worcester Line, which is scheduled e open to passengers in April of this year.
