9 Sent To Hospital After Escalator Incident At Back Bay Station

An escalator carrying train riders out of the station malfunctioned Sunday night, injuring nine people.

BOSTON — Several people were injured after an incident involving the way out of MBTA's Back Bay train occurred Sunday night.

The MBTA said the incident involved an escalator connecting the Amtrak/Commuter rail platforms to the street-level lobby of the station.

Police responded to the scene just after 6 p.m., after receiving word that nine people were injured in the accident and taken to local hospitals to be treated for their injuries.

Even though Boston EMS said injuries were relatively mild, NBC 10 reported witnesses describing a much more gory scene.

Multiple sources referred to witnesses who said the escalator reversed in direction, sending people falling.

The MBTA says the escalator will remain out of service while the incident is completely investigated, lining the station with signs saying "Do not enter," late Sunday night

Numerous trains were delayed because of the incident.
