BRIGHTON, MA — Firefighters worked relentlessly since the early morning hours on Friday when a massive fire broke out in a commercial building in Brighton.

One firefighter was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Boston Fire Commissioner John "Jack" Dempsey says the fire initially started around 4:30 a.m. Friday and has since been named an 8-alarm fire.

The fire spread through multiple floors, eventually making it to the roof of the former Brookline School of Dance at 185 Corey Road, said Dempsey.

Firefighters say they opened the roof of the building to help ventilate all the smoke, only to intensify the flames after.

All firefighters were then told to immediately evacuate the building and get off the roof as the shifting winds made for "zero visibility."

The former dance academy had been converted into a commercial building with offices and music studios.

The cause remains under investigation.
