Red Sox Season 'Likely Delayed' As MLB Suspends Operations

Major League Baseball is the latest pro sports league to take radical steps amid the coronavirus outbreak, jeopardizing the Red Sox opener.

BOSTON — The start of the Boston Red Sox season will likely be delayed as Major League Baseball became the latest professional sports league to suspend operations.

Jeff Passan of ESPN reported Thursday MLB is expected to suspend spring training and likely push back the start of the season, calling it "a formality" that is expected to happen.

The Red Sox were scheduled to open the season March 26 in Toronto. The home opener was scheduled for April 2 against the Chicago White Sox.

On Wednesday night, the National Basketball League suspended its season. Major League Soccer followed suit Thursday and the National Hockey League was expected to make an announcement.
