Boston Trash, Recycling Collection Days And Times To Change

The series of updates to Boston trash collection services includes a new start time of 6 a.m., beginning on July 1.

BOSTON, MA — Despite pushback from residents, the city is changing trash and recycling pickup in the neighborhood, beginning July 1. Next month, instead of a 7 a.m. pick up, residents are asked to have their trash out the door and by the curb by 6 a.m. The South End will be the first stop with trash and recycling.

As part of the city's new five-year contract with Capitol Waste, the City will implement the new citywide trash, recycling and yard waste collection time beginning on July 1, the city announced.

This comes after a number of neighborhood associations have made an effort to get their neighbors to put their trash out in the morning to thwart mess created by rats and raccoons and trash pickers. They say the earlier time, will roll back their efforts to clean up the streets, and encourage folks to put their trash out the night before, again.

But city officials have said the earlier pickup time will help contracted trash companies avoid getting stuck in - or from creating - traffic.

South End

The South End will now be the first neighborhood picked up on Fridays and some of the current routes could change, so it's not clear yet, how much earlier the trucks will actually appear on individual streets for pickup.

North End

Trash collection in the North End will be changed to Mondays and Thursdays. Thursday day street sweeping will be moved to Friday. According to the city, this will make it easier for small businesses to receive deliveries in advance of the weekend. Previously, weekly North End trash collection was scheduled for Monday and Friday.

There's an app for that:

The city has a free "Trash Day" app, for folks to check which day they have trash pick up. It also allows a user to search a directory to find out what's recyclable and what's not. App users can also view a calendar for their home's collection dates, set reminders and get notifications of schedule changes.
