Boston's Zakim Bridge Lit Blue For Fallen Police Officer

Massachusetts landmarks will be lit blue to honor Yarmouth police Officer Sean Gannon, who was killed last week searching for a criminal.

BOSTON, MA — Massachusetts will light up blue Tuesday night to honor a Cape Cod police officer shot and killed while trying to arrest a career criminal last week. Yarmouth police Officer Sean Gannon, 32, and his police dog were shot Thursday in Barnstable by Thomas Latanowich, who has 125 criminal charge on his record, police said. The dog, "Nero," survived.

Gannon's wake is Tuesday afternoon; thousands were expected to attend. At night, state officials said multiple landmarks will be lit blue to honor Gannon. Those landmarks include the Zakim Bridge, South Station and Government Center subway station in Boston and the Burns Bridge in Worcester.

Gannon's funeral is Wednesday. He was a model officer, according to Yarmouth police Chief Frank Frederickson.

"(Latanowich) was going to hurt or kill somebody else and Sean stopped that from happening," Frederickson said Saturday during a vigil. "It's hard to measure what we prevent but I can guarantee you Sean saved somebody’s life."

Latanowich pleaded not guilty to murder.
