Chris Sale will need Tommy John surgery, ending his season before it begins and dealing another bitter blow to the Red Sox.

The Red Sox season is already in flux, with Major League Baseball pushing back Opening Day due to the new coronavirus.

Sale, 30, is Boston's top pitcher. He hasn't pitched since since last summer due to left elbow inflammation.

Earlier this month he faced live hitters for the first time since August. Sale suffered left elbow soreness shortly thereafter and received an MRI.

Sale was already set to miss at least his first two starts this year. Boston brought him along cautiously after he arrived to spring training with pneumonia.
