Newly confirmed coronavirus cases in Massachusetts plummeted, though testing also saw a big drop, according to the state's daily update.

The Department of Public Health said there were only 422 new cases, bringing the state's total to 93,693. There were also 57 more deaths reported, meaning 6,473 lives have been lost due to the coronavirus. The daily fatalities have remained under 100 for six straight days.

Only 4,920 tests were reported, but the positive test rate was still under 9 percent — a good sign. It's unclear if the amount of tests processed was impacted by the holiday weekend.

All four major health metrics the state is using to inform its reopening strategy continued to improve. The seven-day weighted average of positive test rate, three-day average of COVID-19 patients in the hospital, the number of hospitals using surge capacity and the three-day average of COVID-19 deaths continued declined.

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh on Tuesday reminded people that the numbers that are coming out now are reflective of what progress has been made as of two weeks ago, citing the virus's incubation period. It won't be known how the beginning of the state's reopening impacted numbers for about a week.
