BOSTON — Former Red Sox player David Ortiz was released from the hospital yesterday, according to ESPN. The sports news outlet reported Ortiz will continue his rehabilitation at home, where he will be monitored by full-time nurses and visited by his personal physician.

The ex-slugger was shot in June in his hometown of Santo Domingo, the Dominican capital. Police said he was shot once in the back at close range. He underwent emergency surgery at a Dominican hospital, then was flown to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he underwent another surgery. In July he underwent a third surgery related to complications from his injury.

Dominican officials said Ortiz was not the intended target of the shooting; rather, the bullet was meant for a friend of his who was sitting at the same table and wearing similar clothing.
