BOSTON — Red Sox legend David Ortiz was recovering Thursday after his third surgery for complications related to his gunshot wound last month.

"Earlier this week, David underwent a third surgery for complications resulting from his gunshot wound," his wife, Tiffany, said in a statement. "David is recovering well and is in good spirits. We continue to be incredibly appreciative of the kindness and compassion shown to David and to our entire family during this difficult time."

The former slugger was shot in June in his hometown of Santo Domingo, the Dominican capital. Police said he was shot once in the back at close range. He suffered organ damage and underwent emergency surgery at a Dominican hospital. Ortiz was soon after flown to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he underwent another surgery.

Dominican officials have said Ortiz was not the intended target of the shooting; rather, the bullet was meant for a friend of Ortiz's who was sitting at the same table and wearing similar clothing.

The mastermind behind the shooting was identified as Victor Hugo Gomez. Authorities have not said what they believe the motive was.
