East Boston Man Charged With OUI After Sumner Tunnel Crash
After plowing through several sand barrels and flipping his car, a man from East Boston will appear in court on criminal OUI charges.
BOSTON — A man from East Boston is being charged with drunk driving after crashing his car into the Sumner Tunnel early Monday morning.
Eric R. Hernandez, 39, suffered non-life-threatening injuries after Massachusetts State Police say his car rolled over around 2:30 a.m. near the split for Government Center/I-93 north and Storrow Drive.
Troopers say Hernandez is now facing charges of operating under the influence of liquor, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and operating after license suspension or revocation.

Massachusetts State Police say Hernandez struck several sand barrels put in place as a crash guard before slamming into the side of the tunnel.
Hernandez was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital for treatment and will be mailed a summons to appear in court at a later date.

As of Monday afternoon, it was not clear if Hernandez had hired a lawyer.
Both lanes were closed for about half an hour. Traffic was being diverted to Storrow Drive while the Government Center exit remained closed, and the scene was fully cleared at 4 a.m.
