Governor Declares 'David Mugar Day' in Massachsuetts

A statue is planned on the Esplanade for the founder of Boston's Fourth.

Monday marked David Mugar's finale, but the Boston Fourth of July founder will be honored on the Esplanade for years to come.

A businessman and philanthropist, Mugar has put 43 years and millions of dollars into the iconic spectacle on the Esplanade. This Fourth of July marks his retirement from the festivities at the Hatch Shell, but Gov. Charlie Baker assured his memory won't fade anytime soon.

Baker announced Monday night that Mugar's contribution will be literally set in stone, with a statue erected on the Esplanade. Additionally, the governor declared July 4 David Mugar Day in Massachusetts.

The audience at the foot of the Hatch Shell rewarded Mugar with a standing ovation before his final show.

All this, as Mugar's retirement leaves a question mark in its wake. The future of the Fourth of July celebration on the Esplanade is in peril after this year's musical and fireworks celebration wraps up. A replacement sponsor is being sought, and state politicians including Baker have assured some kind of solution will be found.
