Harborfest 2016 Launches This Week

Here's what to expect downtown.

The 35th annual Boston Harborfest launches Friday at noon with a celebration at Faneuil Hall Marketplace.

The annual, multi-day festival celebrates American Independence, honors Boston's colonial roots and showcases the harbor. The patriotic opening ceremony will feature The 215 Army Band, who will lead the crowd in singing the National Anthem, and the ceremonial cutting of the Harborfest cake. Commander Poulin and Commander Gerosa and unnamed "special guests" will use a cutlass to slice the cake, provided by Faneuil Hall Marketplace and created by White's Bakery, the city said. National Park Service Park Rangers and Freedom Trail Players, will be dressed in 18th-century costumes and ready to dole out factoids and stories about Faneuil Hall and other sites along the Freedom Trail.

Harborfest runs July 1-4.
