Heavy Snow Or Nothing: 'Challenging' Forecast For Eastern MA

Boston will get spared again, but southeast of the city is looking at messy weather and even several inches of snow on the Cape and Islands.

With Boston still waiting on its first inch, Nantucket could be in line to see nearly a half-foot of snow Monday.

Eastern Massachusetts may finally get a measurable amount of snow Monday, but most of the region will see flurries at best and much of the Bay State will stay cold and dry.

The Cape could get up to 4 inches and Nantucket 6 inches before Boston ever gets to its first as a storm making its way north clips the region. The island is under a winter storm warning, while the Cape and Martha's Vineyard are under a winter weather advisory.

The National Weather Service said things are still uncertain, but there is "a very sharp cutoff in snow totals from south to north, hence a challenging forecast."

Boston will finally see temperatures stay under freezing all day, but the precipitation won't be there for any significant snowfall. Forecasters are expecting flurries as far north as the city, but nothing more.

The biggest concern remains near the Cape and Islands, where several inches of snow could be accompanied by wind gusts up to 45 miles per hour. The rest of southeastern Massachusetts will see treacherous driving conditions even if the snow doesn't pile up.

"Travel could be very difficult as roads become snow covered this afternoon and early evening," the National Weather Service said.

The entire Massachusetts cost is under a coastal flood advisory this afternoon.

Monday's storm moving up from the Carolinas could mean Nantucket sees its first inch of snow before Boston does, underscoring the striking lack of white stuff this winter.

Several potential dustings have melted away before materializing, leaving Boston several inches shy of its average snowfall at this time of the year. Worcester is nearly a foot behind on its usual snowfall.

The long-term Boston forecast has some wintry weather possible at the end of the week, but no mention of measurable snowfall through at least the middle of January.
