How Much CARES Act Money MA Municipalities Can Get
The $502 million can only be used to reimburse money spent specifically due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Massachusetts will distribute more than half a billion dollars from the federal government to reimburse cities and towns for coronavirus-related expenditures.
The $502 million is part of the $2.7 billion the state received from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act. The money can be used to reimburse money spent specifically due to the coronavirus pandemic — things like personal protective equipment, disinfecting, temporary housing for quarantined people, short-term rental or mortgage help, and a number of other things — but cannot be used to replace lost revenue or fill gaps in the budget.
"To the extent that municipalities are unsure of their precise needs or need money for cash flow purposes, they are free to request funds from the federal Coronavirus Relief Fund, with the understanding that unspent amounts will need to be returned to the Commonwealth," a memo from the state last week reads. "While this approach may be a little complicated due to possible multiple funding sources for similar expenses, providing municipalities with funding now eliminates or reduces FY20 deficits and helps with cash flow issues."

Some funds have already allocated directly to larger governmental entities in need, like Boston and Plymouth County.
Municipalities can apply through a web-based application form.

Any help is welcome for municipalities trying to navigate the budget season essentially in the dark. A drastic dip in local receipts and major uncertainty about what kind of state and federal money can be expected going forward has officials in a bind.
The following is how much money from the CARES Act each municipality is eligible for. Worcester, Springfield and Cambridge are all eligible for more $10 million.
