Hulu Miniseries Based On Michelle Carter To Premiere Next Month

BOSTON — Starting next month, Hulu subscribers will be able to watch the TV miniseries version of the events that followed around Massachusetts-born Michelle Carter, a teenager who was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in 2015 after convincing her boyfriend, Conrad Roy III of Mattapoisett, to kill himself in 2014.

"The Girl From Plainville" is an eight-episode miniseries that will premiere on March 29, starting with three episodes before it switches over to weekly installments.

The series stars Elle Fanning as Michelle Carter, Chloë Sevigny as Lynn Roy, Colton Ryan as Conrad Roy III, Cara Buono as Gail Carter, Kai Lennox as David Carter, and Norbert Leo Butz as Conrad Roy II.

Based on the Esquire article of the same name by Jesse Barron, the limited series will explore Carter's relationship with Roy, the texting incidents that lead up to his death, and her conviction of involuntary manslaughter that caused her to serve 11 of the 15 months she was sentenced.

Carter and Roy both lived in Massachusetts but met in Florida in 2012 while both were on vacation with their families. Their relationship consisted mainly of texting and other electronic communications. Both teens struggled with depression, and Roy had made earlier suicide attempts.

On July 12, 2014, Roy died in the parking lot of the Fairhaven Kmart from carbon monoxide fumes from a gas-powered water pump. Texts between the two show then-17-year-old Carter spending days encouraging Roy to end his life and telling him to get back into the truck when he began to have second thoughts.

Carter's case garnered national attention as it raised thorny legal questions about free speech and provided a troubling yet real look at teenage relationships and depression. It also sparked legislative proposals in Massachusetts to criminalize suicide coercion.
