BOSTON, MA — The holiday rush has begun a day early, it would seem. Getaway traffic has major highways all around the state packed right now, highlighted by a 20-mile-plus backup on Route 128.

We are going to highlight some of the major backups as of 5 p.m. For live and updating backups, scroll down, find the area you are looking for, click the three dots on the bottom right of that map, then click the box for traffic incidents and slowdowns. As always, dark red is very bad.

The biggest delays are on Route 128. Northbound you'll find a more than 20-mile backup from the Pike to Walnut Street in Lynnfield. It's particularly bad between Route 3 and 93. Southbound it's packed from Route 4 in Lexington to the Braintree split.
I-93 North is packed from the Braintree split up to about 95. Southbound is equally tough from just past Route 16 in Somerville down to the split.
The Pike westbound isn't pretty, but if you can get past Weston you'll be past the worst of it. It's a tough ride to get there. Eastbound gets jammed up once you get into Newton.
Route 495 North between Route 3 in Chelmsford up into Lawrence is packed. Southbound isn't so bad outside of a stretch between 3 and 93. It's bad both directions between the Pike and 290.
Other notable slowdowns are Route 2 westbound in Lincoln, Route 3 North once you get on in Burlington and Route 1 North for a bit once you get on in Revere. Route 290 is really bad at 495 and 190. Route 9 West has some slowdowns, including in Natick and Southborough.
